Members have 30 days to comment on a new procedure to inspect boats, the goal of which is to prevent an infestation of the Lake of invasive quagga mussels. An example of the proposed boat inspection form is above.

Boat inspection program for quagga proposed

The Lake and Marina Committee has made a recommendation to move forward with implementation of a boat inspection program to help prevent quagga mussels from entering Canyon Lake. The program was presented as a 1st Reading at the March 2 Board meeting and residents have until April 6 to comment.
“Procedure For Entering and Exiting Canyon Lake with Boats (For Quagga Mussel Prevention)
“Note: Residents are encouraged to call ahead and make appointments for boat inspections to lessen wait times and congestion at the gates.
     • Boats that remain within the community and are only used on Canyon Lake require no action.
     • Boats entering between the hours of 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. without a seal will automatically be equipped with a quarantine seal and an inspection will be scheduled for the following day.
     • Boats leaving the community for service, fuel, storage etc. must exit through the East Gate to be equipped with a service seal and bar code. Boats with a service seal intact may re-enter through any gate, the bar code will be scanned and entry granted.
     • All boats entering the community without a seal must enter the East Gate and be inspected. If the boat is found to be clean, dry and Quagga-free it shall be granted access.
“If a boat is wet or if Quagga mussels are found or suspected, the boat will be equipped with a quarantine seal and the boat owner will be required to sign a quarantine statement form. The boat may be taken to the owner’s residence and parked for the quarantine period (2 to 14 days, plus or minus) or until re-inspected and found to be Quagga-free. Under no circumstance is the boat to be washed, drained, rinsed or launched anywhere within Canyon Lake except at an approved decontamination station. Fines for tampering with the seal, washing or launching the boat are laid out in the quarantine statement.”
