The candidates’ complete resumes and statements of goals and objectives can be found at www.canyonlakepoa.com and will be mailed to Prime Members in Good Standing. In addition, residents can hear from the candidates at several events: the Chamber of Commerce “Meet the Candidates Luncheon” on Wednesday, April 14, at 11:30 a.m. at Pepe’s Restaurant; a “Meet the Candidates Coffee” on Saturday, April 17, at 10 a.m. at the Senior Center and the televised Home Owners Club “Meet the Candidates Night” on April 26 at 7 p.m. in the POA Board Room. George Irvine A Canyon Lake homeowner since 1998, George Irvine says he is running as a reformer, determined to change the direction the POA has been heading for the past few years. George says he will help put an end to personal enrichment and intimidating rule at the expense of the community. The retired U.S. Coast Guard master/captain says it is his intent to help reform POA government by bringing forth change and legislation that will close the loopholes. “I believe we can restore sound government and roll back POA dues to what they should be for a community of this size,” says George. George is the owner/operator of a mortgage, real estate and escrow company. Paul Chenette Paul Chenette, owner of AutoCare USA, has lived in Canyon Lake since 1985 and raised his two children here. He has been active in the Chamber of Commerce and served as its president in 2007. He was named “Citizen of the Year” in 2008; this month, AutoCare USA is being recognized as the “2009 Business of the Year.” An active member of Canyon Lake Community Theatre, Paul last year played Jesus in the group’s production of “Godspell.” He also sings with the Lighthouse Players. He regularly chairs the Jr. Golf fundraising tournament and has been a member of the Ski Club, the Choraleers and Men’s Softball team. As a member or close observer of the Property Owners Association, the City of Canyon Lake, the Merchants Association and the Chamber of Commerce, Paul says he’s seen the strained relationships between these groups and believes he has the management and interpersonal skills to be an effective Director and liaison to bring harmony to the community. “I love Canyon Lake and want to see it returned to the peaceful ‘bit of paradise’ that attracted us to the community in the first place,” says Paul. “My 25 years in the community have given me a historic view of what works here and what residents expect of those who govern Canyon Lake.” Lawrence Neigel A retired commander with the San Bernardino Police Department, Lawrence Neigel holds a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from Belford University. He received training at the FBI National Academy for law enforcement executives and has held public elective office for 21 years. Currently, he is president of the North Shore Condominium Association and president of the Canyon Lake Motorcycle Club. He also chairs the Route 66 Rendezvous executive committee. Lawrence says he is politically aware, but apolitical, holding equality, fairness and reasonableness high in the application and enforcement of the law and rules. He says he will bring new leadership to the Board that will make quality and friendly service to the membership a high priority. Fairness in business practices, open and accessible information to all members and courtesy toward members who deserve it are among his priorities. Other priorities for Lawrence include working with members without penalizing them at every turn, as well as improvements to streets, a dog park and recreation facilities for youth to reduce delinquency and vandalism costs. He would like to see improvement in security patrols to prevent crime and assist members when they need help and to increase fairness in the enforcement of rules. Lawrence wants accountability and openness in reporting to the members all POA finances. He wants to reduce bureaucracy in processing of permits and eliminate fees that should be covered by annual dues. Charles Newsom A resident of Canyon Lake for the past 15 years, Chuck Newsom's work experience includes 25 years in sales and marketing for Fortune 50 food companies, 12 years owning a real estate appraisal company and five years in the banking industry. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Cincinnati. He now is retired and has several goals if elected to serve on the POA Board. Chuck says he wants Canyon Lake amenities to be open and running as efficiently as possible. He wants to maintain the current level of POA fees. He wants to develop and maintain an atmosphere of transparency in POA operations and assure that current services are the best available for the money being spent. He wants better management by the Board to ensure another fiasco like the computer program never happens again. Chuck’s objectives are to see at least one Board member attending management and planning meetings with POA upper management and with POA middle management, as well as with key POA committees. He would like to set up an awards program that allows POA employees and contractors to offer suggestions for improving services or reducing costs. Chuck says he would set a general policy that all essential services over $25,000 go out to bid. And he would create an outreach program to recruit individuals in the community with professional experience to serve on POA committees. Sean McDonald Sean McDonald is a former engineer with the United States Air Force, working on aircraft ejection systems. He also worked at Rockwell as a civilian technician and engineer. As an entrepreneur, he has owned several companies. He opened Lenticular Image LLC in 2003 and started Super Kart in 2005. He is president of Green Eco Tek LLC, which sells concentrated solar power plants and related technologies worldwide. Sean says his goals for becoming POA Director include making Canyon Lake fiscally responsible and providing full transparency to the homeowners for every decision made by the Board. “Right now, the employees of Canyon Lake run the show,” says Sean. “I am going to take Canyon Lake back from the employees and give control back to the rightful owners: the homeowners.” Sean wants to eliminate the present bonus system, suspend some benefits, start drug testing employees, examine each department for waste and fraud, create proper job description for each position and makes sure to hire people with the proper education and credentials for the job. If elected, Sean says all contracts will go out to bid for the best-qualified bidder. Contractors convicted of fraud or employing people convicted of fraud would not be allowed to work in Canyon Lake. Sean says he will reopen the Lodge and upgrade Canyon Lake amenities. He will go paperless where possible. He will put an automated entry system at all gates. He wants to put a motion before the POA Board that states Canyon Lake will fully reimburse a homeowner for expenses if he/she prevails in a lawsuit against Canyon Lake. Among Sean’s other priorities are the lease of Lake surface rights, getting Canyon Lake off the electric grid, communicating POA news in The Friday Flyer and prosecuting those found stealing from the POA. |
