Announcement: Quarterback honored as Student of the Month

     Temescal Canyon High School quarterback and local resident, Matt Mireles, was among students honored as February Students of the Month in February by the Lake Elsinore Valley Chamber of Commerce. The awards luncheon was held on February 23 at the Sizzler Restaurant. Mayor Nancy Horton was in attendance at the luncheon and presented a certificate of recognition from the City of Canyon Lake.
     Principal Errol Garnett introduced Matt's English teacher, Melissa Fink, who spoke about Matt's accomplishments in the past four years at Temescal Canyon High School. Matt has been the quarterback and team captain for four years and maintained 3.5 until last semester when he achieved a 4.0, despite being blind in one eye, according to Mrs. Fink, who spoke about Matt's leadership both on and off the field. Matt brought his parents, twin brother, grandparents and great-grandmother to the luncheon, thanked the sponsors and said, "I am honored to be selected."
     The Student of the Month Program has recognized students for 14 years for their dedication to academics, character, leadership, involvement in school activities and community service, or has shown exceptional drive to excel even in the most challenging circumstances. The students are selected for their character, integrity, love of learning, demonstration of commitment and passion for a special project on campus or in the community, or have persevered through a challenging experience.
