Hankering to go hiking?

The north side of Canyon Lake has three locked gates for which Members in Good Standing can get keys to access trails in the Bureau of Land Management area, according to Member Services Administrator Kathie Barnes. They are behind Fire Station 60 and at Little Pony Dr. and Trigger Dr. A deposit of $100 is required at the Member Services desk; however, the money is returned upon return of the key. Pictured here is a group from the Fish Out of Water and Chair Volleyball classes that has taken to walking every morning for two weeks until the Pool reopens for water aerobics. Informally organized by Bert Barbay, this group used the gate behind Fire Station 60 to hike next to the North Ski Area. According to Bert, the area seemed quite clean, thanks to the efforts of fire crews. Retired Fire Chief Bob Toups estimates crews hauled out four tons of trash and debris earlier this year. Members are required to lock the gates going into and coming out the BLM property. Care should be taken, since wildlife includes snakes and coyotes, though this group encountered nothing more daunting than the hilly terrain.
