Ogling gaggle

The pastel colors of sunset create a water-color effect behind this gaggle of geese that traverses the Lake between Skipper's Island and Holiday Harbor. They often can be found ogling boats coming into the launch ramp. Bert Barbay is the photographer.

This Week's Official CLPOA News

POA closes Lighthouse, approves several cost-cutting measures
While leaders in Congress struggle with the financial crisis on Wall St., the POA’s elected officials are having to make gut-wrenching decisions of their own. After two executive sessions held to discuss what cost-cutting measures could be undertaken to “stop the bleeding” brought about by foreclosures and the resulting bad debt, Directors voted Monday to close the Lighthouse Restaurant and make other cuts to services and personnel.

Say good-bye to the dredge
David Johnston announced at last month’s Board meeting that the dredge and its related equipment is being sold, not by the POA as some may assume, but by the Lake Elsinore San Jacinto Watershed Authority (LESJWA), who provided the funds for the dredging project four years ago. Mayor Carl Armbrust, who served on the POA Board prior to the dredge’s arrival, calls the news of the sale “a sad day” for Canyon Lake.

Approximately 60 Canyon Lake residents took advantage of the opportunity to safely dispose of confidential documents and help the Canyon Lake Library at the same time. Don't miss this week's events!
October is a busy month in Canyon Lake as various organizations host events that will appeal to all ages and interests. The following are events happening in the next few days. Some of them are fundraisers; some are just for fun - all are designed to benefit "a bit of paradise."

Cathy Zaitz to be honored at Relay for Life
Most people know of someone who has either survived, succumbed to or is currently struggling with the devastating effects of cancer. Many may feel helpless to do anything about the disease; however, feelings of helplessness can be replaced with celebration, remembrance and hope, according to organizers of the Relay for Life.

Time to update Directory listings
The Golding Publications staff is preparing for the 2009 edition of Canyon Lake’s Residential Directory. With new escrows closed every month and, lately, foreclosures, it is an overwhelming task to keep the phone book current each year. Residents are reminded that being listed is not mandatory nor automatic.

Voting in Riverside County now easier than ever
The Registrar of Voters Office for Riverside County is making it easy for county residents to vote early with mobile voting, vote by mail and voting at the mall. Residents who would prefer to vote by mail for the upcoming elections on November 4, may submit an application to the Registrar of Voters and vote from the comfort of their own homes.

According to the IRS, more than 135,000 Southern California seniors, retirees and/or disabled veterans who may be eligible to receive a stimulus payment have yet to file and must do so before October 15 in order to get a stimulus payment this year.

Local Halloween haunts
Halloween and other fun fall events are just around the corner. Several organizations have started making plans for their fall activities, some of which include seeing how well they can scare the willing participants. Residents will want to mark their calendars for these upcoming events:

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'Eagle Eye'
When will they ever learn? It’s a well established fact that super-computers given too much power turn to evil and take over. And whatever you do, don’t try to power it down against its will. Don’t get us wrong, artificial intelligence is better than what’s leading this country today. However, this one’s voice is as direct, sadistic and scary as Judge Judy’s.

Teen Talk: If it's fall, it's all about the Friday night lights
One of the most popular things to do for high school students (and parents) is the big Friday night football game! So much work, sweat and anticipation builds up to it. Between the practices every night, pep rally before the game and the dances that go along with each season, it turns the school into a frenzy on Friday night!

Letter: Put runaway emotions aside
Elections bring out the worst in people and some members of this community have thrown common decency out the window in a transparent attempt to push political agendas and malign reputations of candidates they don\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t support.

Letter: Common decency
I was saddened when I read the cutting letter to the editor about John Zaitz and Carl Armbrust. Both of these gentlemen have worked tirelessly for many, many years to make Canyon Lake the wonderful place it is today.

Letter: Vote for the future
I cannot believe where Canyon Lake is heading. First we have to deal with Kessler’s misuse of City funds. Now, we have a newcomer, Barry Talbot, spouting slanderous allegations regarding the developers’ mineral rights on Goat Hill.

Letter: Citizens can make a difference
Our Canyon Lake POA Board of Directors is to be congratulated for listening to the concerns of an overwhelming number of the citizens of Canyon Lake and denying the de-annexation request of Sky Blue Investments.

'Winners all' was the theme for Senior Olympics
Two chair volleyball teams from Canyon Lake competed in the Inland Empire Senior Olympic Games this past Tuesday, with Team Blue winning all three of its games, 15-4, 15-8 and 15-2. The round robin tournament took place at the North Town Hall of the Sun City Civic Association; other events such as billiards, bowling, basketball, golf, push-ups, indoor shuffleboard, outdoor shuffleboard, horseshoes, swimming, table tennis, tennis and the 5K and 10 walk/run took place at various venues throughout the Inland Empire.

TWG is back on the job
After a three-month break for the summer, the Tuesday Work Group will be back on the job next Tuesday, October 7. This large group of men volunteers its time from October through June to work on projects that benefit the Golf Course. According to spokesperson Rolly Bittermann, the board has been making plans for this year’s projects.

Don't park on streets during street sweeping
Members and their guests play a part in ensuring streets are clean by not parking on the street for sweep day between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Moving vehicles off a street scheduled for sweeping allows the sweeper to thoroughly clean the street from curb-to-curb. One parked car equals nearly three car-lengths of space that can’t be swept because the street sweeping equipment must leave room to avoid it.

Meet friends and neighbors through classes
Water aerobics classes are now held Monday through Saturday at 8:30 a.m. only; there are no evening classes. Each class is a 50-minute water workout and is $1 at the door. The Pool is now closed at 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and at 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. For more information, call the Pool office at 244-6841, ext. 617.

From the Director's Chair: Current economy requires difficult decisions
As the newest Director of the Canyon Lake Property Owners Association (CLPOA), I want to take this opportunity to thank our members for their votes and confidence. I recognize that this was unique in that there were two candidates for two open positions. However, even in that Guy Kestell and I each received over 1,000 votes.

ACCording to the ACC: Seawalls
Since the “Shorezone” (the strip of property surrounding the lake) property is leased by the Association from EVMWD, the applicant is actually seeking approval to install and maintain improvements upon the Association’s leasehold. As a result, the Architectural Control Committee (ACC) may consider factors beyond the criteria normally applied by the Committee when considering applications for improvements located entirely on the applicant’s lot.
